Roughly fifty automobiles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Officers report they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Officers then found multiple other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; officials are currently not aware of any harm in association with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for information.
An important official stated the attack rendered him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the right-wing attack five years ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the killing of nine victims by a shooter targeting people of migrant background in 2020.
