Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
