Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
